What Are Abortion Pills?

Abortion pills refer to a method of terminating a pregnancy through medication rather than surgery. It’s only FDA approved up to the first ten weeks of pregnancy.

The process involves taking two medications: mifepristone and then misoprostol. First, mifepristone is taken to block progesterone, the hormone that helps a pregnancy continue. Without progesterone, the lining of the uterus starts to break down. Then, 24 to 48 hours later, misoprostol is taken, which causes the uterus to contract and empty. It’s important to know that once misoprostol is taken, abortion pill reversal doesn’t work.

Risks and Side Effects of the Abortion Pill & When to Seek Help

The abortion pill uses strong medications, and like any medicine, it can come with side effects. Everyone’s experience is a little different, but some of the more common ones include heavy cramping, bleeding, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or just feeling really tired.

Most of the time these side effects are temporary and manageable. That said, if you notice anything more serious—like very heavy bleeding, extreme weakness, or signs of infection—it’s important to reach out to a healthcare professional right away.

Legal, Medical, and Emotional Considerations

Legal status and timelines:

Abortion is now banned in the state of Texas, under Chapter 170A of the Texas Health & Safety Code, except to preserve the life of the mother.

Section 170A.002 restricts a person from performing, inducing, or attempting an abortion. Exceptions are for situations in which the life or health of the pregnant patient is at risk.

It’s also important to note:

  • Women can not be sued or prosecuted for their own abortions.
  • It is perfectly legal and completely confidential to come and talk to us about abortion.

Decisions around abortion are deeply personal and often carry emotional weight. At Pregnancy Resources of Abilene we provide pregnancy testing, ultrasounds, and counseling to support you in making an informed decision. We also offer ultrasounds to help determine viability (that the pregnancy has not miscarried and is not ectopic).

Our team also offers licensed professional counseling and spiritual support for anyone who wants it. We want you to know, you are not alone.

What If I Have Taken the First Pill and Changed My Mind?

In some situations, individuals who have taken the first dose (mifepristone) wish to reverse the process. This must be done very soon after the first dose of mifepristone and involves administering high doses of progesterone to counteract the effects of mifepristone, with the goal of trying to stop the abortion process and maintain the pregnancy. And while the abortion pill reversal is not guaranteed, using the naturally occurring pregnancy hormone progesterone, medical professionals have been able to save up to 68% of pregnancies through the abortion pill reversal program.
