Understanding the Abortion Pill Process

Updated: 2 days ago

Many women facing unplanned pregnancies feel pressured to make quick decisions. Some choose the abortion pill without having really considered other options. But what happens if someone takes the first pill and then has second thoughts?

The abortion pill process involves two medications. The first, mifepristone, blocks progesterone, a hormone that helps maintain pregnancy. The second, misoprostol, is taken 24 to 48 hours later to cause contractions and complete the abortion.

If you have only taken the first pill and decide to change your mind – you may still have a chance to continue the pregnancy. CALL NOW 877-558-0333

Is It Too Late to Reverse the Abortion Pill?

No, it may not be too late. After taking the first dose of mifepristone – some women may wonder if they can stop the process. The protocol known as abortion pill reversal (APR) may help sustain the pregnancy.

APR works by giving extra progesterone to counteract the effects of mifepristone.

Progesterone is a natural hormone that supports pregnancy. If taken soon after the first pill, the chances of continuing the pregnancy increase.

What Should You Do If You Change Your Mind?

If someone has taken mifepristone and wants to continue the pregnancy, immediate action is necessary. Here’s what to do:

Call the Abortion Pill Reversal Hotline at 877-558-0333 to speak with a medical professional.

They will be able to walk you through the process and refer you to your local pregnancy center where you can start the progesterone treatment as soon as possible for the best chance of success.

Time matters in these situations. The sooner you receive progesterone, the better your chances of maintaining the pregnancy.

Does Abortion Pill Reversal Work?

While every situation is different, many women have successfully continued their pregnancies after taking progesterone. Research shows that when treatment starts within 72 hours of taking mifepristone, there is a 64-68% success rate in reversing the effects. Even if more time has passed, seeking medical help is still worth considering.

Some may wonder if progesterone is safe. The answer is yes. Doctors have used progesterone for decades to help women with high-risk pregnancies. The treatment has no known risks to the baby and is a natural hormone already present in the body.
